History
Bohus Fästning was built in 1308 by Norwegian King Håkon V on a rocky island in the Göta River to defend the Norwegian border. Expanded over centuries, it was held by Norway, Denmark-Norway, and eventually Sweden after the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. The fortress endured fourteen sieges without ever being captured, survived massive bombardments and the famous Bohus Bang gunpowder explosion in 1566, and remained one of Scandinavia's most formidable strongholds for more than seven hundred years. As its military role declined, large sections served as a prison — medieval cells, underground dungeons, torture and interrogation, long-term imprisonment for heresy and political crimes, executions, and reports of unbearable conditions in the towers. Much of the fortress still stands today despite partial demolition, with preserved prison and dungeon areas open to visitors.
Legends
Visitors and staff describe feeling watched inside the walls, strange sounds in empty corridors, footsteps on stone stairs, cold spots in dungeon areas, shadow figures near towers and vaults, and a heavy atmosphere in former prison sections — often linked to soldiers and prisoners of the past. Key haunted areas include Fars Hatt Tower (historic prison and brutal dungeon conditions), the vaults (dark underground chambers), and the prison cells (emotionally heavy holding areas). River fog, towering masonry, and isolation after dark make Bohus one of the most cinematic historical locations in western Sweden.
