History

DOCUMENTED: Den Stora Smällen (Västra Porten–Stora Smällen; fornlämning Ytterby RAÄ 22:1) is among the largest grave fields in Kungälv Municipality and Bohuslän, with at least 160 graves including mounds, stone settings, standing stones, ship settings, and a stone circle. Archaeological surveys and university excavations show use from late Bronze Age through Iron Age for roughly 1,500–1,700 years — unusually long continuous burial activity. Settlement and building remains have been investigated nearby. The site lies on a ridge southwest of Ytterby (~5 km west of Kungälv); access is via a path from Torsbyvägen about 130 m south of the railway crossing. Sources: Bohusläns museum, Länsstyrelsen Västra Götaland, RAÄ.

Legends

FOLKLORE & VISITOR REPORTS (not archaeologically verified): Local stories treat the field as sacred ancestral ground. Night visitors describe uneasy feelings, unusual silence, moonlit walks that feel unsettling, feeling watched, cold spots, unexplained sounds, emotional heaviness, and shadow-like movement between mounds. Areas often mentioned include the main burial concentration, the forest edge after sunset, and elevated mounds with wide views. Haunted Sweden presents these as legend and subjective experience, distinct from documented grave counts and dates.
