History
DOCUMENTED: Home Hotel Victoria stands at F. E. Elmgrens gata 5, Jönköping (Småland), in the Väster district near Sofiakyrkan and the matchstick-museum quarter. EBBA RAMSAY: Ebba Gustafva Ramsay (née Karström, 1 Oct 1828 Stockholm – 29 Oct 1922 Jönköping) was a writer, translator, artist and philanthropist — among Sweden's early Sunday-school pioneers, founder of day-care for working mothers' children in Jönköping, organiser of archipelago health colonies, and a national figure in care for disabled and epileptic children centred on Wilhelmsro (Vilhelmsro) outside Jönköping (father's farm bought 1872; Hoppet asylum 1878; later epilepsy-focused homes). THE VICTORIA BUILDING: On Ramsay's initiative the Viktoria / Victoriahemmet property was built in stages about 1877–1882 (often summarised as 1882) by Gothenburg architect J. A. Westerberg in English-inspired architecture. Contemporary descriptions (e.g. Smålands Allehanda 1882) emphasise a large assembly hall (Viktoriasalen, ~400 seats) for prayers, lectures and civic events, reading rooms, guest rooms and an alcohol-free temperance inn (nykterhetsvärdshus) — Ramsay also published on temperance inns and alcoholism as society's "cancer." Hotel and tourism texts often describe Victoriahemmet as a home for vulnerable children (epilepsy / intellectual disability / children without stable support). Haunted Sweden notes that Ramsay's best-documented institutional children's care was at Wilhelmsro, and that popular hotel histories sometimes blend the town Victoria building with that wider philanthropic programme; both belong to her Jönköping legacy. LATER USES: School use from the early 1900s (Myling and local summaries cite ~1903); Sveriges Radio mid-20th century; hotel operation from the 1990s as Clarion Collection Hotel Victoria, later rebranded Home Hotel Victoria (Strawberry). Expansions and renovations (incl. ~38 new rooms ~2021; attic-floor works affecting rooms 426–428) while retaining historic character and match-industry decorative motifs. DARK HISTORY CONTEXT: Care for sick, disabled and socially vulnerable children in 19th-century institutions implies ordinary illness and death among residents and staff over decades — not automatic hauntings. Temperance work responded to documented alcohol harm. Keep philanthropy and building chronology separate from Room 426 folklore below.
Legends
FOLKLORE — EBBA RAMSAY / ROOM 426 (not scientifically verified): Local and hotel tradition holds that Ebba Ramsay never truly left the building she founded. The attic floor — especially Room 426 (also 427 and 428 in staff/PR accounts) — is the primary hotspot. Guests report waking to the sensation that someone sat on the bed edge; soft footsteps; rustling as if on newspaper on the floor; objects moving; quiet whispers; cold spots; feeling watched. Staff and Strawberry materials generally describe the presence as calm and protective — "Jönköping's kindest ghost" — rather than frightening. During renovations, hotel management jokingly "relocated" Ebba to an "Ebba suite" while attic rooms were refurbished (PR storytelling, not evidence). WITNESS & MEDIA: Strawberry's haunted-hotels feature "The benefactress"; JKPG tourism copy; Myling and press interviews with directors citing guest and cleaner experiences (e.g. vacuum attachment allegedly moving). A medium is said to have been invited after repeated reports. SPECIAL AREAS: Room 426; attic floor; historic staircase; atrium / light courtyard (ljusgård) dining heart. ATMOSPHERE: 1882 architecture, elegant atrium, quiet upper floors after midnight, match-industry décor — classic overnight haunted-hotel setting. INVESTIGATION IDEAS: overnight in 426; attic EVP with permission; history vs folklore (Victoria vs Wilhelmsro); staff interviews; Haunted Sweden overnight challenge. BEST CONDITIONS: overnight stay, rainy evenings, winter darkness, quiet weekdays. Keep DOCUMENTED Ramsay philanthropy separate from FOLKLORE and anecdotes above.
