History
Gräfsnäs Castle was built around 1550 by Count Sten Eriksson Leijonhufvud beside Lake Anten outside Alingsås. The castle suffered three major fires in 1634, 1734 and 1834 — each devastating blaze reportedly occurred exactly one century after the last. Local legend notes the final fire broke out on the day ownership papers were about to be signed by a new owner, fueling stories of a curse or sabotage that followed the estate through generations.
Legends
Visitors and locals report feelings of being watched, sudden cold spots, footsteps near upper stonework, shadow-like figures at windows and archways, and strange sounds after sunset — especially around old stair structures. The "100-Year Fire Curse" remains the site's defining mystery: coincidence, curse, or something else entirely? Dense forest, lake fog and historic trails make autumn evenings and blue hour especially eerie.
